Stripe already processes OpenRouter's payments, so the acquisition puts the payments giant directly at the layer where AI traffic is bought and sold.

Strategic implications

For Stripe, the acquisition extends a $159 billion payments business into AI infrastructure. The move signals that control of model routing and billing, not just the models themselves, is becoming contested territory in the AI economy.
