Airbound Raises 7M Series A Led by Greenoaks to Scale Autonomous Drone Freight

Autonomous aerial delivery startup Airbound has raised $37 million in a Series A funding round led by Greenoaks, with participation from DoorDash, Lightspeed, Humba Ventures, and Physical Intelligence co-founder Lachy Groom.

The financing follows an $8.65 million seed round completed less than a year prior, bringing total capital raised by the three-year-old Bengaluru-based company to approximately $50 million. Airbound plans to deploy the proceeds to scale manufacturing, expand commercial delivery routes, and continue development of high-capacity autonomous airframes designed to achieve operational cost parity with ground-based freight trucking.

Airbound Autonomous Drone Architecture and Freight Metrics

Tail-Sitter Airframe Architecture

Airbound's core engineering focus centers on structural efficiency and energy optimization. Standard delivery drones typically expend substantial battery capacity carrying their own airframe weight relative to payload capacity. To counter this, Airbound utilizes a vertical-takeoff-and-landing (VTOL) tail-sitter design that launches and lands vertically before transitioning into horizontal wing-borne flight.

The company's primary production model, dubbed TRT, weighs 3.3 pounds (1.5 kg) and carries a 2.2-pound (1 kg) payload. A larger iteration currently in engineering development is designed to weigh 6.6 pounds (3 kg) while supporting payloads up to 11 pounds (5 kg), enabling greater payload-to-structural-weight ratios than conventional multirotor aircraft. In-house manufacturing and composite fabrication take place at a 43,000-square-foot facility located in Bengaluru.

Commercial Deployments and Infrastructure Ambitions

Airbound has completed more than 13,000 autonomous flight missions across southern India, primarily in Bengaluru and Guntur. The system currently supports diagnostic sample transport for hospital network Narayana Health. In clinical transit operations, Airbound's 2.5-mile autonomous air corridor transports diagnostic vials in seven minutes, compared to road transit windows of three to five hours that depend on batching samples for motorcycle couriers. Narayana's new Banashankari hospital was engineered without an on-site testing laboratory, relying entirely on routine drone shuttles to central diagnostic facilities.

Beyond healthcare transport, Airbound has established an agreement with the Andhra Pradesh state government to map a three-city logistics network targeting up to 10,000 daily flights for retail, e-commerce, and healthcare supply chains. The operational rollout remains contingent on regulatory frameworks for beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) operations, which remain the primary regulatory milestone for commercial scaling across Indian airspace.

Because the prefill phase scales quadratically in raw attention FLOPs and linearly in key-value (KV) cache allocation, long prompts drive up Time To First Token (TTFT) and consume disproportionate G
